Simple Fiscal Facts of Life

In a recent conversation with a state legislator (it doesn't matter
which one because they all echo the same theme),
we discussed my refusal to continue to accept the BOS's
continued BLAME -- the state, the federal government, the
Iraq war.

The fiscal situation Middleboro will find itself in next year
will resemble Bridgewater's, with draconian cuts due to the
lack of leadership exhibited at the STM.

So as not to alientate important 'voters' the Selectmen adbicated
their responsibility by sitting quietly in agreement with the new
positions that were added or replaced, knowing they will be cut
next year of necessity, instead of insisting on fiscal restraint.

Instead of explaining the fiscal facts of life, that those positions
were being paid for with one-time revenues, they played Hail
Fellow, Well Met!

Let me attempt to simply explain the concept.

Let's say Middleboro has $2 million extra this year.

You know it's a ONE TIME AMOUNT.

You won't get it next year, PLUS your expenses
next year will increase.

And just wait until you get the energy bills because of
the devaluation of the dollar!

And you also know you have an 'albatross' in the landfill
that's costing big bucks and you don't know when you
can resolve that.

Your choices are to 1. spend the entire amount in the first
year; 2. save as much as you can to avoid the draconian
cuts, after explaining to voters that the budget passed in
May was in deficit at that time (in others words, the cuts
were made because there was NO MONEY); 3. or take
the cowards' way out, as the BOS did, and allow yourself
to BLAME STM voters because you didn't explain it to
them or lacked the leadership to do so.

Regrettably, 14,000 registered voters who didn't attend

allowed the BOS to take the COWARDS' WAY OUT!

And you allowed it!
