Self Education

In a recent conversation with a gentleman who is TEACHING young Middleboro residents about Town government, he made some interesting comments.

It should be noted, before I reveal the contents of his comments that he had signs on his front lawn opposing the Recall and signs for the INCUMBENTS who were being Recalled.

He had told his young charges that they could not attend Town Meeting or the Selectmen's Meetings because they were not registered voters.

He was unable to name the Selectmen.

He was unable to accurately indicate the number of Selectmen who serve on the Board.

There was much additional misinformation that would have been dispelled by a simple reading of the Town Charter.

Government isn't sexy and the Town Charter won't keep you up at night reading it to the end, but the basic foundations are readily available. (The following is more readable that the Town's Web Site: http://www.mrmiddleboro.org/ )

One hopes that the 'interim' Town Manager will read the section regarding the Finance Committee before he composes his written Budget Proceedures.
